Cuba is unique in the developing world. While it has a high standard of education and health services, it’s struggled to adapt to changing circumstances since losing its main allies and trading partners after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
We began working in Cuba in 1995 to help address the problems caused by the American trade embargo and collapse of the Communist bloc. We work closely with local partners and local government authorities to improve the standard of living amongst Cuba’s poor, creating lasting change by implementing long term development activities and immediate relief through emergency responses.
CARE in action:
Protecting the environment
We’re improving the incomes of rural Cubans and reducing deforestation and environmental degradation by running ecologically sustainable forest farms. We’re working with families who run forest farms, helping communities use forests without contributing to deforestation.
Earning a decent living
Helping dairy co-operatives and small livestock farmers earn a decent living, our projects cover many areas from helping farmers in a drought prone area to protecting natural resources, as well as strengthening the Ministry of Agriculture's Diversified Crops National Strategy.
Recovering from disaster
Recovering from Hurricane Dennis, we’re helping communities in four affected provinces - Granma, Cienfuegos, Sancti Spíritus and Villa Clara - earn a decent living by rebuilding their agricultural lands which were devastated by the winds.
