CARE in Thailand

We work with the government in all four regions of the country, and a lot of our work is focused on marginalised groups such as migrant workers and women. Ensuring that these most vulnerable people can get basic services, such as hospitals and schools, is a vital part of our work.

In Thailand we:
  • run emergency response programmes
  • support small businesses for example giving them access to cheap loans
  • improve agriculture, for example by teaching farmers new techniques

CARE in action:

Fighting HIV and AIDS
HIV and AIDS are rife among migrant workers in Thailand. We work in partnership with other aid agencies to improve their quality of life, that of their families and to help educate sex workers about the issues. With these agencies, we care for those affected by the virus, develop easier ways for migrant workers to get access to health care, help community networks to build stronger links, and influence policy-makers so that their health needs are prioritised by the government.

There are thousands of people living with HIV and AIDS in Thailand. Of these people, there are thousands more individuals and families affected both directly and indirectly. We tackle the negative impacts of HIV and AIDS on women and children throughout the country – impacts such as losing a husband and having to deal with becoming the main earner within the household.

Working through a network of people living with the virus, we organise local activities and groups to support individuals and their families. We also work on a national level, promoting events which are used to inform the public as well as policy makers on the needs of women and children who are affected by HIV and AIDS.

Post tsunami
The tsunami claimed the lives of more than 8,000 people across three provinces in Thailand. At least 186 villages – more than 36,700 people – were affected. CARE continues to help the thousands of people who lost their jobs and their means of earning a living as a result of the tsunami by helping them to rebuild tools and equipment or to set up small businesses.
