CARE has been working in Chad for 30 years.
We are currently running a number of projects with a team of more than 50 people based in N’Djamena and in the regions of Ouaddai and Biltine in Eastern Chad.
Chad is one of the world’s poorest countries. Over the years, CARE has run a number of long-term development projects aimed at improving the quality of life among poor communities in Chad.
CARE in action:
Fighting HIV and AIDS
We are working to reduce the spread of HIV and AIDS in the country by raising awareness about the disease, particularly among high-risk groups, such as migrant workers and those they come into contact with. The project works in 17 sites located along the main transport routes of Chad.
Conflict
The conflict in the region of Darfur in Sudan has forced millions of people to flee their homes. According to United Nations and government estimates, approximately 200,000 of Sudanese refugees from the Darfur region have crossed the border into Chad. This figure is only an approximation as the refugees are scattered along the border in highly inhospitable and often inaccessible areas.
The large influx of Sudanese refugees has put a strain on local resources, which are already scarce. CARE is managing refugee camps in Eastern Chad, where we distribute food and other essential items and ensure that people have access to clean water and sanitation, as well as providing training and opportunities to earn an income.
