CARE began working in Togo in 1986.
Togo enjoyed relatively good economic development during the 1970s and 1980s. Its stable, one-party government provided a framework for economic investments by entrepreneurs and foreign donors, and the people of Togo enjoyed improved social services.
However, political unrest and protracted strikes in the early 1990s led to a breakdown in government services.
CARE in action:
Combating child labour and sexual exploitation
We are working in partnership with two local organisations to prevent the trafficking of children for sexual exploitation and child labour by improving education and social support.
Making vital links
CARE is working to strengthen local organisations and build alliances between them in order to increase their influence on decision-makers so that local communities can have a say in the decisions that affect them.
