CARE began working in Sudan in 1979, establishing its programme in South Sudan in 1993.
We initially focused on improving water supplies, forestry and energy conservation in eastern Sudan and assisted the large influx of Eritrean refugees who had fled the war in their own country.
After the famine of 1983/84, CARE’s focus shifted to the Kordofan region of northern and central Sudan.
We focus on providing safe access to water, food security and basic healthcare.
CARE in action:
Darfur
We have stepped up our emergency relief activities due to the ongoing conflict and drought problems in Sudan, including distribution in the conflict-stricken area of Darfur where we run camps for displaced people. We are providing families with food, shelter and other items such as blankets and cooking utensils.
Helping children get a good education
We are working to improve access to basic education in three regions of South Sudan (Upper Nile, Bahr el Ghazal, and Equatoria). Drop-out rates are high, especially for girls, and only a small percentage of pupils continue past grade four.
Most of the teachers receive little or no pay. We aim to work with the provisional government to increase access to education for all children in South Sudan by improving teacher education and rehabilitating 290 primary schools and ten secondary schools.
