This year has seen at least three million people forced from their homes and more than a quarter of a million houses in India, Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh destroyed. Every year severe storms and floods that are part of the monsoon season hit South Asia.
CARE International, which is already working in the affected countries, is responding to the deepening humanitarian situation.
India and Nepal:
The devastating monsoon season caused the Kosi River to burst its banks along the border of Nepal and India, flooding hundreds of villages and leaving homes completely submerged.
In coordination with the Indian government, CARE is setting up a camp for as many as 5,000 people in one of the worst-affected areas of Supaul district. CARE will prepare meals and provide safe drinking water, clothes and emergency supplies, and implement a cash-for-work programme where adults will receive payment for doing essential work such as distribution of water in the camp.
In Nepal, CARE is providing emergency supplies such as blankets and children’s clothes to 500 of the worst-affected families taking shelter in emergency camps, and providing health support to pregnant women and mothers with small children.
Pakistan:
Working with local partners, CARE is responding to the emergency that destroyed thousands of homes and caused at least 137 deaths. With half a million people being made homeless, the safety of vulnerable women and children is a priority.
CARE is aiming to help 2,000 affected families with special focus on women and children from poor and marginalised families.
CARE will be providing essential non food items (such as mosquito nets, jerry cans and hygiene kits), shelter, clean drinking water, sanitation facilities, medical care and psychosocial support to help prevent the outbreak of water-borne diseases.
Bangladesh:
With reports of ever rising water levels, CARE is closely monitoring the current flood risk and situation.
