Frantic first 24 hours
The DEC Sudan Emergency Appeal, launched on Tuesday, had already topped £3 million by the end of the first 24 hours and is on course to raise more than £10 million. “That’s an extremely swift and generous response from the British public,” said DEC chief executive, Brendan Gormley. “People have clearly been moved by the dramatic television pictures of this terrible humanitarian crisis. “Nevertheless, it represents only £5 per head for each of the two million people affected by this emergency, so we need the donations to keep coming.” Pledges range from a few pounds to £500 or £1,000. “We’ve had some very generous donations, but it’s also moving when young people pledge their pocket money. Every little really does help.” added Mr Gormley. What your donation could buy: · £15 will provide a family with plastic sheeting a water container and purification tablets · £44 will feed a family of five for two months · £84 will buy two household kits including a mosquito net, blanket, and kitchen utensils
The DEC charities benefiting from the Sudan Emergency are: British Red Cross, CAFOD, CARE International UK, Christian Aid, Concern, Help the Aged, Merlin, Oxfam, Save the Children, Tearfund and World Vision.
