The public have already given a massive £10 million to the Sudan Emergency Appeal, launched last week by the Disasters Emergency Commitee (DEC) on behalf of 11 leading aid agencies, including CARE International.
Organisers of the appeal now predict that it will bring in at least £17 million – but are still appealing for more, as aid agencies require funding of up to £27 million to meet the immediate needs of more people. 'The public is being extremely generous, and clearly feels immense sympathy for the plight of more than 1 million homeless people in west Sudan,' said DEC chief executive Brendan Gormley. This appeal is the 50th mounted by the DEC in its 40 year history. 'Over the years, we have raised a total of half a billion pounds to help the people affected by various disasters around the world. That puts paid to any rumours of compassion fatigue!' added Mr Gormley. The money raised by the DEC appeal will help provide those fleeing the violence in Sudan and eastern Chad with shelter, clean water and sanitation. It will also provide emergency food aid and basic items such as water buckets, blankets and soap.
