Hundreds of millions of people currently live and work in over-crowded neighbourhoods without good schools and doctors, without fresh water, without toilets, without any place to dispose of rubbish and no-one to collect it. In many communities, women and girls are forced to live in violent and unsafe circumstances.

Unfortunately, without a chance to vote or participate in how the city is run, the urban poor have limited ability to change their situation. CARE works in over a hundred cities and towns around the world in an effort to transform the face of that poverty.

That is why we are committed to understanding and dislodging the underlying causes of urban poverty so that in the future those people born in and migrating to cities have more options, a greater say, and a better standard of living.
