CARE responds to cyclone

7 May 2008

CARE International has been responding to the cyclone that hit Myanmar (Burma) on Saturday.

The official death toll is 22,000 and increasing on a daily basis one thing we do know is that this is a major disaster and it requires immediate and important support so that we can deliver rapid assistance to the hundreds of thousands of people affected by the cyclone.

CARE has commenced the delivery of direct relief targeting 50,000 families in South Dagon, Thaketa and Patone. We are distributing:

  • Non food items - including distribution of plastic sheeting and family kits (basic household items for cooking)
  • Food
  • Water- ensuring access to clean water through the supply of water purification tablets and safe water storage containers for families

We have had the full support and cooperation from the local authorities which has enabled our teams to get into the filed and get our emergency response started. We have worked in Myanmar for 14 years and has 500 staff members, we have offices in 11 of the 14 states throughout the country so we are well placed to respond to the situation.

Our staff has found that thousands of people have lost their homes and are currently sheltering in pagodas and schools.

We expect to be extending our emergency response in to more areas in the next few days but we need you help to do this.
