As the new year kicks off, it’s already time to make plans for our favourite day of the year – International Women's Day on 8 March.
We’d love you to join CARE as we take part in the Million Women Rise demonstration on 6 March in London, adding our voice to the call for an end to violence against women.
Voices Against Violence is CARE International’s campaign to end violence against women in conflict. Tragically, rape is used as a weapon of war, to terrorise and humiliate women and destabilise whole communities. Unfortunately, the violence doesn’t end when the war does, it all too often remains high, as the frustrations and anger of a society are taken out on women.
But women around the world are standing up to the violence, and demanding change. In Uganda in December, CARE activists marched through Kampala, demanding the government enact laws that protect them from violence. In Nepal, the government has named 2010 as the year against gender based violence, and women around the country are organising activities to raise awareness and influence change.
However, too often, the voices of women in conflict and post-conflict societies are unheard. You can help raise their voices by joining CARE and Million Women Rise in calling for an end to violence against women.
It will be a great opportunity to learn more about the issues affecting women living in conflict, to meet like-minded people, and to add your voice against violence to mark International Women’s Day. The march takes place in central London on Saturday 6 March, finishing in Trafalgar Square.
