Andy Bearpark, CARE trustee, explains why the actions of the UK government impact on the lives of poor and marginalised people.
"CARE is all about hope and dignity - for everyone, however marginalised their circumstances. Being a trustee is about two things. It's about helping CARE to do what it wants, and needs, to do. And it's about connecting CARE to the wider world. That means talking about CARE to the widest possible audience, whether it be policymakers, observers, or of course potential funders.
Even as the years roll on in this century there are still many, far too many, people who live in poverty and misery. The world knows this, but seems powerless to find a lasting solution. The Millenium Development Goals seem like a distant dream. Agencies like CARE have a crucial role to play.
The British Government through firstly the Overseas Development Administration and lately the Department for International Development has done much. There are many success stories. But much more remains to be done.
This is not a party political issue. It's about the fact that the British people do care. They care a lot and want their Government, of whatever party, to help those who are least able to help themselves - wherever they may be.
The election is almost with us. Development and Humanitarianism are rightly non-party issues. But voting is still vitally important to make sure that we get a Government which can deliver on its promises, to us and to the poor."
