The run up to a general election is an important time to raise awareness of the issues that CARE works on.
In April and May, CARE campaigners swung into action and emailed almost five hundred parliamentary candidates, asking for their views on violence against women in conflict.
Thank you very much to everyone who took part, here are a few highlights. 292 people took action – writing to a total of 485 parliamentary candidates.
This covered over 150 constituencies across the UK. The map below shows the spread of constituencies, zoom in to see if your constituency was covered.
Furthermore 174 of you then wrote to your local newspapers – with a total of 19 letters being published in local newspapers ranging from London to East Anglia to the Scottish borders.
Over a third of MPs in the new parliament are new, and this presents CARE with an exciting opportunity to build relationships with politicians who care about the same issues that we do.
You can help us by letting us know who they are! If you wrote to your local candidates and received a reply, please forward it on to the campaigns team at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
Below are some of the responses we’ve had so far:
“As a country, we have a moral responsibility to the world’s poorest countries; we would make sure Britain fulfils that responsibility and do everything in our power to get the rest of the rich world to follow suit. Liberal Democrats are fully committed to working towards a world free from poverty, inequality and injustice." From the Office of Nick Clegg MP, Deputy Prime Minister and leader of Liberal Democrats
“I strongly agree with your call for action to protect women from sexual violence in conflict; this is something that must be an important part of our response to conflict around the world. As our Green Paper on international development, One World Conservatism, argues, civilians - particularly women and children - bear the brunt of conflict." Jane Ellison MP, Battersea
“Thank you for taking the time to contact me about CARE’s Voices Against Violence Campaign. This is an extremely important issue and international focus on women and girls is vital… If re-elected, I want to continue to stand up for the rights of women internationally, particularly in conflict." Sadiq Khan MP, Tooting.
