The discussion was hosted by Alastair Stewart, ITV News Presenter and CARE Ambassador.
Members of the panel included Stephen O’Brien MP (Parliamentary Under-Secretary for International Development), Dr Stephanie Ware Barrientos (Senior Lecturer in Global Development at the University of Manchester) and representatives from the private sector and civil society.
Josephine Ulimwengu, Assistant Country Director of CARE in Rwanda, also spoke at the event.
The discussion touched on the following issues:
- Some argue that large corporations have become more influential to development than the government and NGO’s
- Can corporations be trusted to act in the interest of the world’s poorest people?
- Over 2.6 billion people around the world live on less than two dollars a day
- 90% of jobs created in poor countries are linked to the private sector
The evening was a great success and CARE are very grateful for all the effort that staff and speakers put into making this such an interesting evening.
