Video: Horn of Africa - A changing world

For centuries, many in the Horn of Africa have depended on animal herding for their survival. But this traditional nomadic lifestyle is under threat from soaring populations and a changing climate.

CARE offering these pastoralists a chance to retrain so that they are able to expand, perhaps growing vegetables or keeping bees. CARE also offers cash for the slaughter of animals which cannot be fed, rather than letting them die, and shares the meat with those who need it if the animals are healthy.

We are providing access to clean water for animals and people, constructing sanitation infrastructure, and providing training. Jack Otienom, CARE's Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Project Manager in the region says "By the end of the programme, we want each household to be able to access some form of basic sanitation and safe water."
