Windsor is to play host to one of CARE's charity walks for the second year running, raising funds to help support people affected by disasters overseas.
By joining aid and development agency CARE International's sponsored 'Walk All Over Poverty' on Saturday 1 October, participants will help to support people whose lives have been torn apart by natural disasters or conflict. For communities that are already poor and vulnerable, any kind of disaster – human-made or natural – can be catastrophic. CARE is appealing to Windsor locals to sign up to this great charity walk event and help raise vital funds for those in need.
Teams and individuals will challenge themselves and poverty by walking 10 km or 25 km along the Jubilee Cycle Path from Windsor to Maidenhead, and back along the Thames Path, through Eton. CARE encourages people to come along for the day, test and improve their fitness, and help some of the world's poorest people.
The event will be supported by the Co-operative Membership in the South East as part of their goal to tackle global poverty. Debbie Mitchell, Co-operative & Membership Officer, said: "We are delighted to support the vital work of CARE International in helping to rebuild lives, homes and livelihoods after disasters. CARE's goals align with our own ethical business model, and we'll be encouraging our members to Walk All Over Poverty."
CARE's charity challenges manager Neil Munro adds, "Last year's walk went so well, with such fantastic support from people in the Windsor area, we decided to make it an annual event. We smashed our fundraising target in 2010 and we hope we'll be able to do it again in 2011 with another great sponsored walk."
CARE is hoping to top the £35,000 that was raised from last year's inaugural event to help support their emergency relief. For example, just £25, which is the minimum donation that the charity is asking from each participant, could feed a mother and her child for a week during an overseas emergency.
