CARE staff in Gaza distribute food items during the conflict in 2009.
Due to the more than 2 year long humanitarian and economic blockade of the Gaza Strip – and compounded by the constant aerial, naval, and ground bombardment by Israeli forces during “Operation Cast Lead” – the health care system in Gaza reached critical levels.
Within hours of the first airstrikes in December 2008, CARE responded with emergency medical supplies and equipment for hospitals and clinics across Gaza Strip. In addition CARE supported more than 350 farmers to re-establish their livelihoods by providing tools and seeds.
As recently as July 2010, CARE has been able to replace some of the essential medical equipment to one of the major hospitals in Gaza ensuring women have improved access to preventative and treatment facilities that address the leading causes of chronic disease and death.
