The changing face of development: The role of the private sector.
As the consequences of inflated food prices once more have greatest impact on the world’s poorest, and the effects of climate change continue to cause destruction to the most vulnerable communities - there is no doubt there remain enormous international development issues that still need to be overcome.
During the recent UN Summit on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in New York, renewed commitments to investment and trade in developing countries were made by global leaders, and increases to the aid budgets of the wealthiest countries of the world were pledged. At the Summit’s Private Sector Forum, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon declared there was “no longer any doubt that business plays an integral role in delivering economic and social progress”. His challenge to all was how to now “bring (business) solutions and innovations to scale”.
CARE believes there is an increasingly important role for business to play in the fight against poverty, and that as an international development organisation CARE has a responsibility to find ways of maximizing the positive impact the private sector has on poverty.
