Cameroon

A young boy from CameroonA young boy from CameroonCARE has worked in Cameroon since 1978.

As elsewhere CARE encourages communities to participate in development projects, because we believe that local communities are best able to identify their own needs.

Fighting HIV and AIDS

HIV and AIDS prevention is a major part of our work in Cameroon. AIDS is a major cause of extreme poverty in the country. Many families become destitute when family members fall ill or die of AIDS.

Lots of children have been orphaned because of the AIDS epidemic, some of whom are themselves infected with HIV. We are helping communities to care for AIDS orphans and children affected by AIDS.

Earning a decent living

In the north of Cameroon, we are helping poor families to improve their ability to earn an income by giving them access to savings and loans, so they are able to make investments that will increase their future income.

We are also increasing crop yields in the area by building and improving irrigation systems, making farmers less vulnerable to drought.
