Nearly 350,000 people have fled the country, 250,000 people have been forced from their homes and more than a million people are living in desperate need.
Independent regional governments have been set up in Somaliland and Puntland, but neither have the money to provide services, like schools and hospitals, that people need.
CARE is one of the few agencies who have worked continually in Somalia since 1981 - with only a short break in the early 1990’s.
Conflict Resolution
Conflict resolution is built into all of our work in Somalia. We aim to ensure that when we give a community the skills to build a well, for instance, we not only take these into account, we also help to bring violent and long-standing disputes to an end by bringing those involved together to find a resolution.
Post Tsunami
We have been helping people get back on their feet after the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami which affected Somalia’s costal communities. We have replaced vital equipment for fishermen as well as building schools and training teachers.
