CARE International UK names Gates Foundation's Laurie Lee as new chief executive

04 June 2014 - Laurie Lee has been announced as the new chief executive of CARE International UK, one of the world's leading humanitarian and development agencies.

Laurie will be joining CARE International UK, an international charity present in over 80 countries helping the world's poorest people find routes out of poverty with a particular focus on women and girls. CARE delivers emergency aid to survivors of war and natural disasters, and helps people rebuild their lives in the aftermath.

Laurie joins CARE from his position as the Africa Director, at the Gates Foundation where he leads a team working on policy, advocacy and government relations in Africa, including the establishment of new Gates Foundation offices in Ethiopia, South Africa and Nigeria.

Prior to joining the Gates Foundation Laurie was a civil servant in the British Government, mainly in the Department for International Development (DFID), where his last position was Deputy Director and Head of the International Trade Department. From 2004 to 2006 Laurie served as Deputy Director and Foreign Policy Adviser on Africa to Prime Minister Tony Blair. While in this role, he helped to lead the UK's 2005 G8 Presidency focus on Africa and Poverty, culminating in the Gleneagles Summit, negotiating some of the key agreements on debt, aid and HIV/AIDS.

Laurie's other experience includes working as DFID's programme manager for Afghanistan and South Africa, and serving as a UK negotiator on African issues in the European Union. He is also a longstanding Trustee and member of the Global Advisory Board at the Global Poverty Project. He will begin his role at CARE on 18 August.

Oliver Stocken, Chairman of CARE International UK, said: "We are delighted to welcome Laurie Lee to the role of Chief Executive. Throughout his career Laurie has shown an unwavering commitment to tackling injustice and making a difference to those who live with the daily burden of poverty. We are very happy to welcome someone with experience in finding pioneering approaches to the fight against poverty and working with policy makers to create lasting change on the ground."

Laurie Lee said: "I am delighted to be joining CARE International UK. Its vision of a world where poverty has been overcome and people live in dignity and security is close to my heart and shared by the British public.

"CARE works in innovative ways and is recognised by the UK Government as delivering outstanding results with high value for money. I am excited to join this fantastic organisation."
