Meet Ayanna
Ayanna* lives in Ethiopia with her husband and her two young children. The family used to make a living through farming, but drought has forced Ayanna’s husband to leave their village and find work in the city. The money he earns is nowhere near enough to feed the family.
This is the only food left in my house...
... she told us, holding a small bowl of porridge. “It has to be enough for me and my two children for the next 24 hours. I feed my children first, but I can still only give them a small handful.”
Ayanna’s children are malnourished, and when they do eat, the food contains little nutrition. When we met her, Ayanna hadn’t been able to produce breast milk for over a month as her body wasn’t getting the nutrients it needs to do so.
In Ethiopia alone, over 4 million pregnant or breastfeeding women are suffering from malnutrition. Worldwide, the number of people facing dangerous levels of hunger has doubled since 2020.

Your donation could help provide emergency food and malnutrition support, so that women like Ayanna and their children can survive the unimaginable impacts of conflict and crisis. Or for a family forced to flee their home and sleep in a tent, it could provide waterproof sheeting and heaters to help them stay warm and dry.
It could also help women in rural communities to generate sustainable income and lift themselves out of poverty for good. CARE supports women to pool their income and make loans to each other, to set up new businesses. And with the money they make, they can feed their children. Not every three days, but every day.
