Following the announcement that Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a Gaza ceasefire deal, Helen McEachern, CEO of CARE International UK, says:

“We welcome the news of a potential ceasefire as a moment of hope, and a vital step towards ending the horrifying suffering of Palestinians and all hostages.

“For the people of Gaza who have had no respite from the Government of Israel’s relentless bombardment - the humanitarian needs are immense. For months, Israel has severely limited and controlled the flow of food, fuel and medicine into the Gaza Strip, weaponising aid as a tool of starvation and deprivation. The United Nations has reported that more than half a million people are starving. Every hour that passes, more Palestinians are dying.

“The Israeli Government must now let independent, and established humanitarian actors like CARE, quickly and safely deliver life-saving aid. It is crucial, also, that all parties to the conflict engage in the peace process in good faith to ensure the return of all hostages and those arbitrarily detained to their families.

“The UK Government must use all its diplomatic levers to ensure a lasting ceasefire and peace agreement where Palestinians and Israelis alike can live in safety and in full fulfilment of their rights.”
