Your support is incredibly important to us – and to the people and communities we work with in 100 countries around the world. Last year, thanks to the kindness and generosity of individual supporters like you, nearly £4.8 million was raised for CARE’s work from people like you making a donation, taking part in a fundraising event or giving a small loan to an entrepreneur through Lendwithcare.
The support you give helps make it possible for us to continue to save lives and support women, girls and people in need, wherever they are. So it’s really important that you can trust us to fundraise in the right way, to spend your donations wisely, and to be open and honest in all our communications with you.
Our promise to you
- We will always respect your privacy; if you prefer not to be contacted by certain methods please let us know.
- We will always protect your data; we will not sell your personal details or swap them with any other organisation.
- We have a supporter care team who are dedicated to you. We always love to hear from you.
- We will share stories of how your support is helping to change lives for the better.
- We will be honest with you. If we face challenges or make a mistake we will let you know; we are always learning.
- We are accountable to the people we reach through your support.
How we communicate with supporters
You may already be familiar with how we communicate with supporters if you’ve read our CARE in Action newsletter, seen one of our Facebook or TV adverts, spoken to a face-to-face or telephone fundraiser, or received a letter in the post about an emergency appeal.
Whenever we talk about our work, we always use stories and images of real people who have been helped by CARE, and only if they have given us permission to do so.
There are certain things we don’t do to communicate with current supporters, or potential new ones. We do not send unsolicited ‘cold’ mail or phone people we don’t know - we will only contact you direct if you have given us permission to do so.
Building positive relationships with supporters
It’s important to us that our supporters are happy with how we communicate with them, and the feedback we get about this is overwhelmingly positive. But we know not everyone has the same experience. That’s why we offer all our supporters the opportunity to change their communication preferences at any time by contacting our Supporter Care team and we openly publish our policy on collecting information about individual supporters.
If you are unhappy about any aspect of our communications then please contact our Supporter Care team to let us know the details so that we can investigate further and try to resolve the problem. If you are not satisfied with how we handle your complaint you can also contact the Fundraising Regulator.
We often work with professional fundraising agencies to spread the word about our work. We work with these fundraising agencies because of their specialist expertise – for example in making TV adverts or carrying out online advertising – and we pay for their services from part of our annual fundraising budget.
It’s very important to us that our fundraising campaigns are monitored closely to ensure we’re acting responsibly and that the agencies we work with meet the high standards we set ourselves. This is why we also carry out regular spot checks, mystery shopping and call listening when fundraising campaigns are running.
We also have strict contracts in place with every fundraising agency we’re currently working with to ensure we follow best practice and legislation set out by the Institute of Fundraising and the new Fundraising Regulator.
Who we work with
Individual fundraisers working on our fundraising campaigns are employed by the fundraising agency itself, not CARE, and all are paid at least the National Living Wage or London Living Wage because we feel it’s important to work with organisations who share our values of social justice and fairness.
All fundraisers representing CARE are trained about our important policies before they speak to members of the public to ensure they follow data protection and vulnerable contacts practices. We are proud of the enthusiasm and professionalism fundraisers show when speaking to people all over the UK every year.
