Empowerment of women
We focus on the empowerment of women and girls, particularly from low caste and tribal communities. Not only are they disproportionately affected by poverty and discrimination, but in a patriarchal society, they also suffer from multiple deprivations in the realisation of their rights and entitlements. In all of its programmes, CARE India works to eliminate the behaviours which perpetuate gender-based violence and gender inequality. Empowerment of women and girls is both an end in itself as well as an indispensable milestone in achieving a just and equitable society.
Emergency response and being prepared
India is one of the most disaster-prone countries in South Asia. When disaster strikes, we provide immediate emergency relief while working with the community over the long term to prepare for future disasters and reduce risks. For example, in 2013 we responded to widespread destruction caused by tropical storms in Uttarakhand and on the Odisha coast, where previous work on disaster risk reduction significantly reduced the number of casualties.
