Hundreds of people have been killed or remain missing after devastating flash floods on the Nepal-Tibet border.
Tens of thousands have been forced from their homes as floodwaters swept away villages, roads and vital infrastructure. More than 10,000 families have been left without safe shelter and urgently need support.
With your help, CARE is providing life-saving assistance, including food, clean water, emergency shelter, hygiene supplies and dignity kits. We are working closely with local partners and communities to identify and meet the most urgent needs.
How CARE is responding to the Nepal flash floods
CARE has worked in Nepal since 1978 and is responding alongside trusted local partners and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority in Nepal.
Together, we are providing emergency relief including:
- Ready-to-eat and nutritious food for families who have lost their homes and livelihoods.
- Safe drinking water and sanitation facilities to help prevent the spread of waterborne diseases.
- Emergency shelter kits, bedding and clothing for people displaced by the flooding.
- Emotional support and counselling for people coping with trauma and loss.
- Period products and hygiene supplies so women and girls can manage their health and live with dignity.
- Safe spaces for women and girls to help protect them from violence, exploitation and abuse.
Our local partners include the Community Self Reliance Centre, Community Development Centre Nepal, Manekor Society Nepal and Sahayatri Samaj Nepal.
Supporting women, girls and vulnerable communities
Floods and displacement affect everyone differently. Women, children, older people and people with disabilities often face additional risks and barriers during emergencies.
CARE is carrying out rapid assessments to understand how women and girls are being affected by the flooding and displacement, ensuring support reaches those with the greatest needs.
The challenge of reaching affected communities
Access remains one of the biggest challenges in the response. Washed-out roads and destroyed bridges have left some of the hardest-hit communities, particularly in Rasuwa District, extremely difficult to reach.
CARE has prepared hundreds of CARE Package for Emergencies kits containing five essential forms of support:
- Solar panels for lighting and charging devices
- Tarpaulins and shelter materials
- Water purification supplies
- Hygiene items
- Kitchen utensils, ready-to-cook food and ready-to-eat food
More than 100 emergency kits have already been handed over to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority and the Prime Minister's Office for distribution. The Nepal Army is transporting supplies to Dhunche in Rasuwa as additional emergency assistance is mobilised.
