The Liberal Democrats’ have voted to centre global gender equality at their Autumn Conference.

Welcoming this decision, Dorothy Sang, Head of Advocacy & Influencing at Care International UK, said:

“We applaud the Liberal Democrats’ decision to put women’s and girls’ rights at the heart of their policy platform. At a time of global aid cuts, their pledge to ensure 20% of aid spending focuses on gender equality is one of the strongest signals of support for women and in stark contrast to the current Government plans to cut standalone gender programming.

“Women’s rights are being eroded, worldwide. We hear every day from women’s rights organisations who are fighting for survival, even as demand for their work grows. This pledge recognises their vital role and shows that political leadership in the UK can match their courage. Protecting progress on gender equality is more urgent than ever, and we look forward to continuing to work with Liberal Democrat MPs and peers to turn this commitment into real change for women and girls everywhere.

"We urge all political parties to match this ambition and act with the urgency the moment demands.”
